Clinical Trial Offered at University of Pennsylvania Hospital
The Ovarian Cancer Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital is conducting a Phase I/II research study for subjects who have advanced stage ovarian and primary peritoneal cancer. The purpose of the research is to see how well the study product DTA-H19 is tolerated and to study its possible effects on ovarian and primary peritoneal cancer. Eligible participants must have symptomatic ascites (fluid in the abdominal cavity) and limited options for treatment.
Enrolled participants will receive the study product DTA-H19. The study product is made from deoxyriboneucleic acid or DNA , which is a type of genetic material. The study product DTA-H19 is a liquid solution that contains many small circular shaped pieces of DNA which are called DNA -plasmids. The liquid solution will be injected through a port (an opening) that will be created outside the body. The port will be connected to a catheter (thin tube) that will be inserted into the abdominal cavity where the cancer cells are growing. DTA-H19 works by causing a change inside the cancer cells but only the cancer cells that have the H19 gene. DTA-H19 does not affect normal cells because these cells do not have the H19 gene. Once inside the cancer cell, DTA-H19 causes the cancer cell to poison and destroy itself.
The Sponsor, BioCancell, has successfully completed a Phase I/IIa clinical trial studying DTA-H19 in patients with bladder cancer, and is continuing with a Phase IIb clinical trial scheduled to end in 2010. Early data in ovarian cancer are promising.
